Pink bathing suits and pillows are packed
for the drive up to the islands,
she pulls the mini-van down the drive
and small hands wave out the window,
while he
reclines on the porch,
takes a swig,
lights up a Cuban,
and wonders -
knowing he would decline
- why he never got an invite.

well you can only ask so many times before you start to assume...and you know sometimes you just need some space as well....i am sure there is a story there....smiles.
ReplyDeleteoy... i def. like some alone time from time to time but i wouldn't decline such an invitation for sure.. almost a little character study this..
ReplyDeleteOh! That is bad... He must have been invited as well.
ReplyDeleteFactual write; I like it.
hmmm sad when worlds break apart like this
ReplyDeleteshe probably knew he would decline as well and grew weary of asking...
Oh that end is so strong... feeling excluded when he does not want to participate.
ReplyDeleteA bit of mystery in this tale. Wondering just WHY he was never invited; or perhaps they just knew he wouldn't come anyway if he WAS asked. But obviously SHE is preparing for a good time.
ReplyDeleteI hate cigars--maybe she does too. The picture is so clear--good job.
ReplyDeleteMaybe because he never asked...maybe because he never comes anyway ~ Maybe he needs space but still I wouldn't miss going out to the islands, smiles ~
ReplyDeleteGood one here ~
..an ironic story..whatever what the dynamics were ...good job!
ReplyDeleteI'm thinking that she and the kids had to get away from him and his noxious cigars. (You got an extra Cuban there for me?) Great story.
ReplyDeleteperfect play on those who want what they refuse to accept, well done
ReplyDeleteboy... I kind a feel they are all glad he isn't coming along. (Ha, just read Buddah's comment)
ReplyDeleteYes I think I can understand her wanting to get away from the cigars...but let him ponder anyway I say!! Nice write.
ReplyDelete...he knew he would decline --- you have the answer right away.... sometimes, confidence to self earns one more friends.... staying with your ego is good but not all the time.... ye know we only live once so why not live it to the fullest.... smiles... loved the sentiments here... can relate in so many ways...
ReplyDeleteA common domestic scene, I'll bet! Wonderful little details included to fill in the story - fun write! K
ReplyDeleteI'm with her; why bother to issue an invitation if you know it's only going to be thrown back in your face? This is an all-too-common scene in daily life.
